Mungkin orang semakin berpikiran Taylor Swift ingin mengubah image country-nya dengan mengeluarkan single berunsur rock ini. Pikiran mereka salah. Karena Taylor telah merilis Mean terlebih dahulu di US dan The Story of Us untuk single yang dirilis di UK pada tanggal 4 April 2011. Dan rumornya lagi, The Story of Us bakal dirilis tanggal 26 April di US. Untuk international single, kemungkinan Taylor akan memilih The Story of Us ketimbang Mean. Karena Mean terlalu country untuk penikmat musik di seluruh dunia. Cara menembak pasar yang cerdas.
Kembali ke The Story of Us, nampaknya Taylor tak hanya ingin berjalan di jalur country pop. Gadis 21 tahun itu mulai menabur sedikit bumbu rock di album itu. Mulai dari dentuman drumnya sampai permainan gitarnya yang powerful. Sedikit mengingatkan akan musik-musik Avril Lavigne jaman Let Go dan Under My Skin. Meskipun sejatinya genre keseluruhan lagu ini masih dikategorikan country pop.
The Story of Us sendiri menceritakan tentang pertemuan Taylor Swift dan salah seorang mantannya dalam suatu acara penghargaan. (Kalau kamu punya album Speak Now, kamu akan tahu acara penghargaan apa itu) Banyak yang ingin taylor katakan pada mantannya itu. Salah satunya, ‘I miss you’, tapi terlalu canggung untuk melakukan itu. “I’d tell I miss you but I don’t know how. I’ve never heard silence quite this loud,” begitulah kata Taylor melalui lagunya.
“Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room and we’re not speaking. And I’m dying to know is it killing you like it’s killing me?” Taylor menyanyikan bagian refrain dengan asyik, diiringi aransemen yang tak kalah asyik, meski sebenarnya terdengar perih. Taylor cuma ingin bilang untuk mantannya, pertunjukkan saling diam ini membuatnya tersiksa, serasa akan dibunuh.
Dalam acara penghargaan itu, Taylor tak merasa sedang dinominasi. Ia merasa sedang melakukan kontes saling diam dengan mantannya itu. Itulah mengapa lirik ini lahir: “This is looking like a contest of who can act like their careless.” Tapi bukan berarti Taylor ingin diam-diam seperti itu, terbukti dari lanjutan liriknya “But I liked it better when you were on my side.”
Sejatinya, lagu yang direkam terakhir ini adalah lagu ballad penuh emosi yang dibungkus dengan sedikit unsur rock, percikan country yang tak banyak, dan didominasi oleh taburan bumbu pop.
